Get away from it all and enjoy a ski weekend

Tuesday, 20 March 2012 4:35 PM

Enjoying long days of hitting the slopes followed by evenings warming yourself next to a log fire or hanging out with friends in a bar might sound like an ideal break to you. If so, skiing holidays could be your idea of a perfect getaway.

There are several reasons why many people look forward to their skiing break every year, as this is when they can get some fresh air, take in some spectacular snow-filled views of the mountains and immerse themselves in the fun and lively apres ski scene.

What's more, you don't have to go on a long holiday to enjoy the ski season, and you can find cheap ski deals if you choose to book a last-minute weekend break.

Here are just a few resorts you might like to consider:

Chamonix

This is one of the most popular ski resorts for both a weekend break and longer ski trips away.

As Chamonix is located in France, you won't have to spend too much of your time travelling, which means you'll have longer to enjoy the 700 km of linked ski area here.

Chamonix is a particularly good destination to visit if you're an experienced skier, as 90 per cent of the slopes here are 2,000 m above sea level or taller, so you'll be able to find plenty of steep runs to try.

However, this could also be an ideal option for beginners, as the well-established resort has ski schools and gentle slopes where they can build up their confidence.

One of the most popular parts of a skiing break is the apres ski scene, and there are more than 200 bars in the town of Chamonix, so you will definitely find somewhere for you to warm up with a few drinks at the end of the night.

Meribel

Another popular destination for short ski trips is Meribel, situated in the heart of the Three Valleys ski area.

Due to its high altitude, it is a very snow-sure resort, which means you don't have to worry so much about when you book your weekend away, as you are likely to be able to get the most out of the white stuff whenever you travel.

If you're not an experienced skier, you will still be able to enjoy your trip. Have a go at the beginner runs, explore the town of Meribel and have fun in the evenings visiting the many bars and restaurants that can be found here. There are even a couple of clubs you could head to, although it is wise to clear your sore head before hitting the slopes the next day!

Les Gets

Part of the Portes du Soleil area in France, Les Gets is another destination you might consider visiting for a quick weekend away.

Families may particularly enjoy a stay here as there are a number of facilities that cater directly for children, including the English-speaking ski and snowboard school and beginner slopes.

You might even time your trip to coincide with one of the many festivals that take place in Les Gets every year.

One of the best parts of a holiday on the slopes wherever you go is being to come back to your ski chalet and warm up besides a cosy log fire, indulging in a hot toddy and homemade comfort food.

These are just a few reasons why ski weekends are a firm favourite among snow sports enthusiasts - book a chalet today to discover the rest for yourself!
