Christmas market magic in Maastricht

Wednesday, 24 November 2010 3:31 PM

The Dutch city of Maastricht is kicking off its winter programme in style next week, with Christmas markets, winter theatre productions, special museum exhibitions and live concert performances right through into the New Year.

From December 3 to January 2, the whole city will be lit up, with a large central skating rink as well as the Christmas market, which will offer one-of-a-kind gifts and festive treats, such as oliebollen (traditional deep-fried doughnuts), warm waffles, and mulled wine.

Take a cruise down the Meuse River, or explore the subterranean cultural treasures of Maastricht Underground, where there will be seasonal storytelling events this December.

There are many opportunities to hear the sounds of Christmas during concerts given by the Limburg Symphony Orchestra, Mastreechter Staar, and the Netherlands Bach Society. The Christmas festival held at the Maastricht Drama Academy will also give you a taste of tomorrow’s theatrical talent.
